Your boiler thinks it sees a flame even though it hasn't started the burner yet, which is causing it to shut down for safety.
Book a Gas Safe engineer within 24–48 hours. Your boiler may be unsafe or could break down completely if left.
Technical description: Flame detected with the burner off – possibly caused by ionisation, defective electrode or main board defective. Check the printed circuit board (PCB) or ionizing electrode wiring
What causes this fault?
This fault occurs when the boiler's sensors detect an electrical current that mimics a flame even though the gas hasn't been ignited yet. The most common reason is a sensor that has become covered in carbon deposits or moisture, which tricks the system into seeing a 'ghost flame' and shutting down for safety. In some cases, a fault within the internal control board can also cause it to misinterpret these signals.
This fault is slightly more common during periods of high humidity or heavy rainfall, as moisture ingress can affect the sensitive electrical signals on the electrode or wiring.
