Your boiler is struggling to keep its flame lit after it fires up, meaning it cannot stay on long enough to heat your home or water.
Book a Gas Safe engineer within 24–48 hours. Your boiler may be unsafe or could break down completely if left.
Technical description: No flame after ignition phase – possible causes: detection electrode fault, flame unstable, incorrect valve gas offset, flue gas circuit
What causes this fault?
This fault occurs when the boiler successfully creates a spark and ignites, but fails to detect that a flame is present, causing it to shut down for safety. The most common reasons are a dirty or worn-out detection sensor, an unstable gas supply that prevents a steady flame, or a blockage in the drainage system that causes the flame to 'drown' shortly after lighting.
This issue is more frequent during very cold snaps, as a frozen condensate pipe can cause water to back up into the heat exchanger and extinguish the flame.
Engineer required
This fault requires a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not attempt gas-related repairs yourself.
