Your boiler has tried to light the gas but failed, meaning it cannot provide heating or hot water until reset.

Call an engineer soon

Book a Gas Safe engineer within 24–48 hours. Your boiler may be unsafe or could break down completely if left.

Technical description: Ignition unsuccessful when starting up

What causes this fault?

This fault occurs when the boiler attempts to ignite the gas three times but fails to detect a flame. The most common reasons are a temporary interruption in your gas supply, a blocked burner, or an issue with the electrodes that create the spark needed for ignition.

This fault is more frequent during extreme cold spells, as external gas meters or pipes can sometimes freeze or experience pressure drops.

Typical repair cost £100-350 (including labour)
