Your boiler has detected that the water temperature in your heating system is getting too high, causing it to shut down for safety.
Book a Gas Safe engineer within 24–48 hours. Your boiler may be unsafe or could break down completely if left.
Technical description: Central heating (CH) sensor is overheating
What causes this fault?
This fault occurs when the water inside the boiler is unable to move away from the heat exchanger quickly enough, leading to a rapid rise in temperature. The most common reason is either a failing circulation pump that isn't pushing the water through the system or a faulty temperature sensor that is sending incorrect readings to the boiler's computer.
This issue often comes to light during the first cold spell of autumn, when the pump has been sitting idle all summer and becomes seized upon restart.
DIY fix possible
Check that all radiator valves are fully openEnsure the boiler pressure is between 1.0 and 1.5 barCheck if any bypass valves are closedReset the boiler to see if the fault clears
