Your boiler has switched itself off because it has become too hot to operate safely.
Book a Gas Safe engineer within 24–48 hours. Your boiler may be unsafe or could break down completely if left.
Technical description: Safety temperature exceeded (overheat thermostat)
What causes this fault?
This fault occurs when the water inside the boiler reaches a dangerously high temperature, triggering a safety sensor to shut the system down. The most common reason is a lack of water flow, often caused by a failing pump or a blockage in the internal pipework that prevents heat from being carried away from the burner.
This fault is more frequent when the heating is first turned on after summer, as pump components can seize up during long periods of inactivity.
DIY fix possible
Check that all radiator valves are fully open to allow water to circulate.Ensure there is enough water pressure indicated on the boiler's pressure gauge (usually 1.0 to 1.5 bar).Press the 'Reset' button on the control panel once the boiler has cooled down.
