What causes this fault?
This fault occurs when the boiler's control system attempts to start a fire but cannot detect a stable flame after several tries. It is often caused by a lack of gas reaching the burner, worn-out spark igniters that can no longer create a light, or a dirty sensor that fails to 'see' the flame even if it is lit. In some cases, an internal component like the gas valve may have failed, preventing fuel from entering the combustion chamber.
This fault is more common during extreme cold snaps, as external gas meters or regulators can sometimes freeze and restrict the flow of gas to the property.
DIY fix possible
Check if other gas appliances in your home, such as a hob, are working to confirm gas supply.Check that your gas meter has credit if you use a pre-payment meter.Press the reset button on the boiler control panel once to see if it clears the fault.
