Common problems guide

The most common Ariston Excalibur problems

The faults most likely to send a Ariston Excalibur into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

The 6 most common faults

01
Ignition Failure High DIY-safe

Your boiler is unable to light the gas burner to provide heating or hot water and has shut down for safety.

What to try first

Check if other gas appliances, like a cooker, are working to ensure gas is reaching the property.Ensure your gas meter has credit if you use a pre-payment meter.Press the 'Reset' button on the control panel to attempt a restart.

Est. cost
£100-280
Parts
Ignition Electrode, Gas Valve, Flame Sensing Electrode

02
Insufficient System Pressure High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure inside the system has dropped too low to operate safely.

What to try first

Locate the flexible silver filling loop underneath or near your boiler.Slowly open the small tap(s) on the loop to allow water into the system.Watch the pressure gauge and close the taps firmly once it reaches 1.5 bar.

Est. cost
£0-120
Parts
Filling loop, Expansion vessel, Pressure relief valve
Full guide for Insufficient System Pressure
03
Overheating High DIY-safe

Your boiler has shut down because it has detected that the water inside the system has become dangerously hot.

What to try first

Locate the reset button (usually marked 'R') on the control panel and press it.Ensure all radiator valves are fully open to allow water to flow freely.Check that your system pressure is between 1.0 and 1.5 bar on the gauge and top up if necessary.

Est. cost
£120-350
Parts
Circulation Pump, Overheat Thermostat, Main Heat Exchanger (Descaling)
Full guide for Overheating
04
Insufficient Circulation High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure inside your heating system has dropped too low to function safely.

What to try first

Locate the filling loop (a silver braided hose) underneath the boiler.Open the valves at both ends of the loop to allow water into the system.Monitor the pressure gauge on the front panel and close the valves once it reaches between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.

Est. cost
£80-150
Parts
Pressure Relief Valve (PRV), Expansion Vessel, Pressure Gauge
Full guide for Insufficient Circulation
05
E61 567 High Engineer

Your boiler is failing to ignite because it cannot detect the spark required to start the flame safely.

Est. cost
£150-250
Parts
Ignition electrode, Ignition lead, PCB
Full guide for E61 567
06
E61 569 High Engineer

Your boiler is failing to detect the flame correctly, so it has safely shut itself down to prevent gas from building up.

Est. cost
£120-220
Parts
Ionisation electrode, Ignition lead, PCB
Full guide for E61 569

Call a Gas Safe engineer if…

  • You can smell gas or see signs of a leak
  • The Ariston shows an Emergency or High severity code
  • The boiler keeps locking out after repeated resets
  • You've tried the DIY checks and the fault hasn't cleared
  • There's visible water leaking from the boiler
  • The flame is yellow or orange instead of blue
