Common problems guide

The most common Baxi Combi 130 HE problems

The faults most likely to send a Baxi Combi 130 HE into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

The 6 most common faults

01
L7 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that it is running without enough water inside, which prevents it from operating safely to protect the system from overheating.

What to try first

Locate the external filling loop, usually two braided hoses connected to the pipework under the boiler.Open the filling valve slowly until the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler reads between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.Close the valve tightly to prevent the system from over-pressurising.

Est. cost
£80-150
Parts
Pressure relief valve, Pressure sensor, Expansion vessel

02
L8 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that it is running without enough water inside, which prevents it from firing up to provide your heating or hot water.

What to try first

Locate the external filling loop, usually a silver braided hose under the boiler.Open the valves on the filling loop to allow cold mains water into the boiler.Monitor the pressure gauge on the front panel until the needle reaches the green zone, typically between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.Close both valves tightly and restart the boiler.

Est. cost
£80-120
Parts
Pressure relief valve, Pressure sensor, Expansion vessel

03
24 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because it cannot light the flame or the internal drainage pipe is backed up with water.

What to try first

Check if your shared external white drainage pipe is frozen or blocked. If frozen, pour warm (not boiling) water over the pipe to clear the ice.Press the reset button once to see if the boiler restarts.

Est. cost
£90-280
Parts
Flame sensing electrode, Ignition lead, Gas valve

04
25 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has shut down because a safety sensor has detected that the system is starting to overheat.

What to try first

Ensure all radiator valves are fully openCheck that the system water pressure is between 1.0 and 1.5 barSwitch the selector dial to the reset position for five seconds and release

Est. cost
£120-£350
Parts
Safety Thermostat (Overheat Limit), Circulation Pump, Main Heat Exchanger (Descaling)

05
27 High DIY-safe

Your boiler is struggling to circulate water, which is usually caused by the system pressure being too low or a problem with the internal pump.

What to try first

Check the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler; it should be between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.If the pressure is too low, use the filling loop underneath the boiler to top it up.Reset the boiler by turning the selector switch to 'R' for five seconds.

Est. cost
£180-350
Parts
Circulating Pump, Water Pressure Sensor, Expansion Vessel Re-charge

06
Dry-Fire High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected there is not enough water flowing through it to safely heat up, which has caused it to shut down to prevent overheating.

What to try first

Check the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler or under the sinkIf the pressure is below 1.0 bar, use the filling loop to top it up to 1.5 barEnsure all radiator valves are open and turn the selector switch to reset

Est. cost
£120-350
Parts
Circulation pump, Flow switch, Pressure sensor

Call a Gas Safe engineer if…

  • You can smell gas or see signs of a leak
  • The Baxi shows an Emergency or High severity code
  • The boiler keeps locking out after repeated resets
  • You've tried the DIY checks and the fault hasn't cleared
  • There's visible water leaking from the boiler
  • The flame is yellow or orange instead of blue
