Technical description: Inverter High Temperature

What causes the Ideal L2E fault?

This fault occurs when the electrical brain of the heat pump, known as the inverter, gets too hot and shuts down to prevent permanent damage. The most common reasons are a failure of its dedicated cooling fan or the thermal paste that transfers heat away from the electronics becoming dry and ineffective. It can also be caused by debris blocking the air vents, preventing the unit from cooling itself down properly during operation.

This fault is more common during summer heatwaves when high outdoor temperatures make it much harder for the internal cooling system to keep the electronics at a safe operating temperature.

Typical repair cost £150-£600 (including labour)

DIY fix possible

Check that the outdoor unit is not covered by leaves, snow, or debrisEnsure there is at least a one-metre clear space around the outdoor unit for airflowTurn the power supply to the heat pump off and back on again to attempt a reset
