Common problems guide

The most common Johnson Starley Comet 80 problems

The faults most likely to send a Johnson Starley Comet 80 into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

02
13 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has tried to light itself several times without success and has now locked itself out for safety.

What to try first

Check if your gas meter has credit and the emergency control valve is openCheck if other gas appliances, like a cooker, are working correctlyPress and hold the reset button for five seconds to see if the boiler restarts

Est. cost
£100-£280
Parts
Ignition electrode, Flame sensing probe, Gas valve

03
37 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that the water pressure in the central heating system is too low to operate safely.

What to try first

Locate the silver braided filling loop hoses underneath or near your boiler.Slowly open the valves on the filling loop until you hear water entering the system.Watch the pressure gauge and close the valves tightly once the needle reaches 1.5 bar.

04
41 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because it cannot detect any water pressure in the system.

What to try first

Locate the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler or underneath on the pipework. If the needle is below 1 bar, locate the filling loop (the silver flexible hose with two small valves).Open both valves slowly to let water into the system until the gauge reaches 1.5 bar, then close them tightly.Turn the boiler off and back on to reset the fault code.
