Common problems guide

The most common Johnson Starley Warmaheat problems

The faults most likely to send a Johnson Starley Warmaheat into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

The 6 most common faults

01
13 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has tried to light several times but has failed to stay on, so it has locked itself out for safety.

What to try first

Check that your gas pre-pay meter has credit (if applicable)Check that other gas appliances like your hob are working to ensure gas supplyPress the reset button on the boiler control panel once

Est. cost
£100-£250
Parts
Ignition electrode, Flame sensing probe, Gas valve

02
37 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that the water pressure in the central heating system is too low and it has stopped working as a safety precaution.

What to try first

Locate the external filling loop, which is usually a silver braided flexible hose under or near the boiler.Slowly open the one or two valves on the hose to let water into the system.Watch the pressure gauge and close the valves tightly once the needle reaches between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.

Est. cost
£0-160
Parts
Filling loop valve, Expansion vessel re-pressurisation, Pressure sensor

03
41 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because it cannot detect any water pressure, which means it cannot safely heat your home.

What to try first

Locate the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler or underneath it.If the needle is below 1 bar, find the filling loop (a flexible silver hose).Slowly open the valve(s) until the pressure reaches 1.5 bar, then close them tightly.Press the 'Reset' button on the control panel.

Est. cost
£80-180
Parts
Water pressure switch, Expansion vessel, Man-Machine Interface (MMI) PCB

04
E01 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has tried to light several times but failed, so it has locked itself for safety.

What to try first

Check that your gas prepayment meter has creditEnsure your external gas stopcock is fully openPress and hold the reset button for five seconds

Est. cost
£100-280
Parts
Ignition electrode, Gas valve, Flame sensing probe
Full guide for E01
05
E03 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has become too hot and has shut itself down as a safety precaution to prevent damage.

What to try first

Check that all radiator valves are open to allow water to flow.Ensure there is enough water pressure in the system by checking the pressure gauge.Wait for the boiler to cool down and try pressing the reset button.

Est. cost
£120-350
Parts
Circulation pump, Overheat thermostat, Main heat exchanger
Full guide for E03
06
F13 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has shut itself down for safety after too many failed attempts to reset it remotely or due to a persistent internal fault.

What to try first

Locate the reset button on the boiler control panel.Press and hold the reset button for five seconds.Wait for the boiler to complete its startup sequence; if the code returns, contact a professional.

Est. cost
£100-250
