Common problems guide

The most common Alpha Eco 11 13 problems

The faults most likely to send a Alpha Eco 11 13 into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

01 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has tried to light several times but cannot establish a flame, meaning your heating and hot water will not work.

What to try first

Check if other gas appliances, like a hob, are working to ensure gas is reaching the property.Verify that your gas meter has credit if you have a pre-payment meter.Press and hold the 'R' or reset button for a few seconds to see if the boiler restarts.During freezing weather, check if the white plastic condensate pipe leading outside is frozen and thaw it with warm water.

02 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has become too hot and has shut down as a safety precaution to prevent damage.

What to try first

Wait 30 minutes for the boiler to cool down naturally.Ensure all radiator valves are fully open and there are no blockages.Press and hold the reset button for a few seconds to restart the system.

Est. cost
£100-£350
Parts
Overheat Thermostat, Circulation Pump, Primary Heat Exchanger

08 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that the water pressure is outside the safe operating range, usually meaning it is too low to run properly.

What to try first

Check the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler; it should be between 1 and 1.5 bar.If the pressure is below 1 bar, use the filling loop valves under the boiler to carefully top it up with water.Close the valves tightly once the needle reaches 1.5 bar and press the reset button.

£0-160
Parts
Filling loop, Expansion vessel, Pressure sensor

10 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure inside the system has dropped too low.

What to try first

Check the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler; it should ideally be between 1 and 1.5 bar.Locate the filling loop (usually a silver braided hose with one or two small taps underneath the boiler).Slowly open the tap(s) until you hear water entering and see the pressure gauge rise to 1.2 bar, then close them tightly.

£0-120
Parts
Filling loop, Pressure switch, Expansion vessel recharge

27 High DIY-safe

Your boiler is struggling to move water through the system, which is causing it to overheat and shut down for safety.

What to try first

Check that all your radiator valves (TRVs) are turned to the highest settingEnsure your boiler pressure is between 1.0 and 1.5 barBleed your radiators to remove any trapped air

Est. cost
£120-£350
Parts
Circulation pump, Main heat exchanger, Flow/Return thermistors

31 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has lost its connection with the external thermostat or control panel, meaning it cannot receive instructions to turn the heating on.

What to try first

Check if your wireless thermostat has run out of batteries and replace them if necessaryEnsure the thermostat is within range of the boiler and hasn't been moved too far awayTurn the electrical power to the boiler off and back on again after 30 seconds to restart the connection
