Common problems guide

The most common Atag Premier problems

The faults most likely to send a Atag Premier into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

The 6 most common faults

01
HIGH High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure inside the system has become too high, which is a safety mechanism to prevent damage.

What to try first

Locate a radiator bleed valve and use a key to release water into a container until the pressure gauge drops to 1.5 bar.Alternatively, use a drain-off valve at a low point in the system to remove excess water.Check that the filling loop valves are fully closed and not passing water into the system.

Parts
Pressure relief valve, Pressure sensor

02
C40 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that the water pressure inside the system is too low for it to operate safely.

What to try first

Locate the filling loop, which is a silver braided hose with one or two valves connecting your cold water mains to your heating pipes.Slowly open the valve(s) to allow water into the system while watching the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler.Stop filling once the needle on the gauge reaches the green zone, typically between 1.0 and 1.5 bar, then tightly close the valves.

Est. cost
£80-150
Parts
Filling loop, Pressure sensor, Pressure relief valve
Full guide for C40
03
FILL (flashing) High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that the water pressure inside your heating system is too low, meaning it needs to be topped up with more water to work correctly.

What to try first

Locate the external filling loop, which is usually a flexible silver braided hose connecting two pipes near the boiler.Open the valves at both ends of the filling loop to allow water into the system until the pressure gauge reads between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.Close both valves firmly and ensure the filling loop is disconnected if required by your specific installation.

Parts
Filling loop, Pressure relief valve, Expansion vessel

04
C20 High Engineer

Your boiler is struggling to accurately measure the temperature of the water returning to it, so it has stopped operating to prevent potential overheating.

Est. cost
£120-200
Parts
Return temperature sensor, Wiring harness
Full guide for C20
05
Block 01 High Engineer

Your boiler has stopped working because an external safety device, such as a frost thermostat or a cylinder cut-off, has sent a signal that it needs to shut the system down.

Est. cost
£120-250
Parts
External frost thermostat, Cylinder overheat stat, External wiring link
Full guide for Block 01
06
Block 80 High Engineer

Your boiler has automatically paused itself because the exhaust gases getting rid of the fumes have become dangerously hot.

Est. cost
£150-300
Parts
Flue gas temperature sensor, Heat exchanger, PCB
Full guide for Block 80

Call a Gas Safe engineer if…

  • You can smell gas or see signs of a leak
  • The Atag shows an Emergency or High severity code
  • The boiler keeps locking out after repeated resets
  • You've tried the DIY checks and the fault hasn't cleared
  • There's visible water leaking from the boiler
  • The flame is yellow or orange instead of blue
