Common problems guide

The most common Atag Sov. problems

The faults most likely to send a Atag Sov. into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

The 6 most common faults

01
c1 18 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure is critically low and needs to be topped up.

What to try first

Locate the filling loop (the flexible silver hose) underneath or near the boilerSlowly open the small valve handle(s) until you hear water flowingWatch the pressure gauge until it reaches between 1.0 and 1.5 bar, then turn the valves off tightly

Est. cost
£0-120

Filling loop, Pressure sensor, Expansion vessel

02
C 61 High DIY-safe

Your boiler's internal computer brain has temporarily lost its ability to talk to the control sensors and requires a manual power restart.

What to try first

Locate the main electrical power switch for your boiler (usually a fused spur switch nearby).Turn the power switch to the 'Off' position and wait for 30 seconds.Turn the power switch back to 'On' to allow the system to reboot and re-establish communication.

Est. cost
£0-180
Parts
Internal wiring loom, Main PCB (Printed Circuit Board)

03
C 78 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that water is not circulating properly, which could mean the pump has stopped working or the water pressure is too low.

What to try first

Check the pressure gauge on your boiler or under the sink.If the pressure is below 1.0 bar, use the filling loop to top it up to 1.5 bar.Reset the boiler to see if the error clears.

Est. cost
£250-450
Parts
Circulating pump, Water pressure sensor, Expansion vessel

04
C1 10 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has switched itself off because it has become too hot internally, often due to a lack of water flow or a blockage.

What to try first

Check that your system pressure is between 1.0 and 1.5 bar on the pressure gaugeEnsure all radiator valves are fully open to allow water to circulatePress the 'Reset' button on the boiler control panel after the unit has cooled down

Est. cost
£120-350
Parts
Overheat Thermostat, Circulation Pump, Main Heat Exchanger cleaning
Full guide for C1 10
05
C1 11 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has sensed that the water inside has become far too hot and has shut down as a safety precaution.

What to try first

Check that all radiator valves are fully open to allow water to circulateEnsure your system water pressure is between 1.0 and 1.5 bar on the gaugeReset the boiler by pressing the reset button to see if the fault clears

Est. cost
£120-350
Parts
Circulation Pump, Overheat Thermostat, Main Heat Exchanger (Flushing)
Full guide for C1 11
06
C1 33 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has tried to light several times but has failed to produce a flame, meaning your heating and hot water will not work.

What to try first

Check if other gas appliances, like a cooker, are working to ensure gas supplyCheck if your gas meter has creditPress the Reset button once to see if the boiler restarts

Est. cost
£120-350
Parts
Ignition electrode, Ionisation probe, Gas valve

Call a Gas Safe engineer if…

  • You can smell gas or see signs of a leak
  • The Atag shows an Emergency or High severity code
  • The boiler keeps locking out after repeated resets
  • You've tried the DIY checks and the fault hasn't cleared
  • There's visible water leaking from the boiler
  • The flame is yellow or orange instead of blue
