Common problems guide

The most common Ferroli Modena F problems

The faults most likely to send a Ferroli Modena F into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

The 6 most common faults

01
LED 5 (Flashing) High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that the water pressure in your radiators or pipework is too low for it to run safely.

What to try first

Locate the filling loop (usually a silver flexible hose) underneath the boiler.Gradually open the black handles (one or two) to allow water into the system.Watch the pressure gauge and close the handles once the needle reaches 1.5 bar.

Est. cost
£0-120
Parts
Filling loop, Expansion vessel, Pressure sensor

02
LED2 on High DIY-safe

Your boiler has entered a safety lockout mode because it either failed to light properly or it has detected that the system is getting too hot.

What to try first

Check that your gas supply is turned on and you have credit on your meter.Locate the selector switch and turn it to the 'R' (Reset) position for several seconds, then back to 'On'.Ensure your radiator valves are open and the system pressure is between 1 and 1.5 bar.

Est. cost
£100-280
Parts
Ignition Electrode, Overheat Thermostat, Gas Valve

03
LED5 flashing High DIY-safe

Your boiler has switched itself off because the water pressure in your heating system has dropped too low to operate safely.

What to try first

Locate the filling loop (usually a silver flexible hose) underneath or near the boiler.Open the filling loop valves slowly until you hear water flowing and watch the pressure gauge.Close both valves tightly once the pressure gauge reaches between 1 and 1.5 bar.

Est. cost
£0-120
Parts
Filling loop, Expansion vessel re-pressurisation, Pressure sensor

04
E03 High Engineer

Your boiler has stopped working because it cannot safely confirm that the fan is moving air and exhaust gases correctly through the system.

Est. cost
£120-280
Parts
Air pressure switch, Fan assembly, Venting tubes
Full guide for E03
05
LED 2 High Engineer

Your boiler has detected an internal fault and has shut down as a safety precaution, meaning you currently have no heating or hot water.

Est. cost
£120-350
Parts
Ignition Electrode, Gas Valve, Printed Circuit Board (PCB)
Full guide for LED 2
06
LED4 flashing Low DIY-safe

Your boiler is currently taking a brief planned break between heating cycles to protect its components and ensure efficiency.

What to try first

Wait 3 to 5 minutes for the 'egg timer' delay to finish automaticallyCheck that your room thermostat is set high enough to call for heatEnsure the boiler pressure gauge is between 1 and 1.5 bar

Call a Gas Safe engineer if…

  • You can smell gas or see signs of a leak
  • The Ferroli shows an Emergency or High severity code
  • The boiler keeps locking out after repeated resets
  • You've tried the DIY checks and the fault hasn't cleared
  • There's visible water leaking from the boiler
  • The flame is yellow or orange instead of blue
