Amber neon

Your boiler has stopped working because the amount of water inside your heating system has dropped too low.

High DIY-safe £80-150

What to check first

  1. Locate the external filling loop, which is a flexible silver hose connected to two valves under the boiler.
  2. Slowly open both valves to allow mains water into the system until the pressure gauge reads between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.
  3. Close both valves tightly and ensure the boiler resets itself.

Parts commonly replaced

  • Pressure relief valve
  • Pressure gauge
  • Expansion vessel
Amber neon (on panel)

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure inside your heating system has dropped too low.

High DIY-safe £0-£100

What to check first

  1. Locate the external filling loop, usually found underneath the boiler.
  2. Open the small valve(s) to allow mains water into the system while watching the pressure gauge.
  3. Stop filling once the needle reaches the green zone, typically between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.
  4. Ensure the valve is fully closed tightly to prevent over-pressurisation.

Parts commonly replaced

  • Filling loop
  • Pressure relief valve
  • Pressure gauge
Demand

Your boiler is not currently receiving a signal from your timer or thermostat telling it to switch on.

High DIY-safe £0-120

What to check first

  1. Check that your room thermostat is turned up higher than the current room temperature.
  2. Ensure your programmer or timer is set to 'ON' or 'AUTO'.
  3. Check if the batteries in your wireless thermostat need replacing.

Parts commonly replaced

  • Room thermostat
  • External programmer
  • Receiver box
DHW pump

Your boiler is struggling to manage the temperature of its internal hot water store, meaning you likely have no hot water available.

High Engineer only £180-£450

Parts commonly replaced

  • Domestic Hot Water (DHW) Store Thermistor
  • Main Control PCB
  • Wiring Harness
Flow

Your boiler is not detecting that a hot tap has been turned on, which is preventing it from heating your water.

High Engineer only £120-220

Parts commonly replaced

  • Flow switch
  • Flow turbine
  • Diverter valve diaphragm
Lock-out

Your boiler has stopped working because it cannot light the flame required to produce heat or hot water.

High Engineer only £150-350

Parts commonly replaced

  • Photocell
  • Ignition electrodes

power

Your boiler has lost electrical power and cannot start any heating or hot water functions.

High DIY-safe £60-120

What to check first

  1. Check that the boiler's main power switch is turned to the 'ON' position.
  2. Inspect your home's main consumer unit (fuse box) to see if a circuit breaker has tripped.
  3. Check the fused spur switch (usually near the boiler) and replace the 3-amp fuse if it has blown.

Parts commonly replaced

  • 3-amp fuse
  • Printed Circuit Board (PCB)
  • External programmer/timer
Red neon

Your boiler has automatically shut down because it detected that it is running too hot to operate safely.
