Common problems guide

The most common Ideal Mexico problems

The faults most likely to send a Ideal Mexico into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

The 6 most common faults

01
L1 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has shut down because it has detected it is getting too hot or that water is not moving through the system properly.

What to try first

Check that your system pressure is between 1 and 1.5 barEnsure all radiator valves and the boiler isolation valves are fully openPress the reset button once the boiler has had time to cool down

Est. cost
£120-£350
Parts
Circulating pump, Thermistor (NTC sensor), Main Heat Exchanger
Full guide for L1
02
L2 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has failed to light because it cannot detect a flame, causing the system to lock itself for safety.

What to try first

Check if your gas supply is active (e.g., check other gas appliances or prepay meter credit)If it is winter, check that your external condensate pipe hasn't frozenPress the Reset button once to see if the boiler restarts

Est. cost
£100-£350
Parts
Ignition electrode, Flame sensing probe, Gas valve
Full guide for L2
03
F1 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that the water pressure in the system is too low to operate safely and effectively.

What to try first

Locate the filling loop (usually a silver flexible hose) underneath or near the boiler.Slowly open the small tap(s) on the filling loop to let water into the system.Watch the pressure gauge and turn the tap(s) off once the needle reaches between 1 and 1.5 bar.

Est. cost
£0-120
Parts
Filling loop, Expansion vessel, Pressure relief valve
Full guide for F1
04
F2, FN or LN High DIY-safe

Your boiler is failing to stay lit or cannot detect a flame, which means your heating and hot water have stopped working for safety reasons.

What to try first

Check if other gas appliances in your home, like a hob, are working to confirm gas supply.Ensure your gas pre-payment meter (if applicable) has sufficient credit.Press the 'Reset' button on the front control panel and hold for two seconds.

Est. cost
£120-£350
Parts
Flame Sensing Electrode, Gas Valve, Ignition Lead
Full guide for F2, FN or LN
05
F7 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that the electricity supply coming into your home is too low for it to operate safely.

What to try first

Check if other electrical appliances in your home are behaving strangely or flickeringVerify if there is a known power cut or grid issue in your local areaContact your electricity network provider (DNO) to report a potential supply fault

Est. cost
£0-150
Parts
Printed Circuit Board (PCB), External Voltage Stabiliser
Full guide for F7
06
FU High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that the water is getting too hot too quickly, likely because it cannot flow through the system properly.

What to try first

Check that all radiator valves are turned on and open.Ensure the large lever valves underneath or near the boiler are in the 'open' position (parallel to the pipe).Check that your pump is running if it is external to the boiler.Reset the boiler using the reset button once you have checked the valves.

Est. cost
£100-£350
Parts
Circulation Pump, Flow and Return Thermistors, Main Heat Exchanger (if blocked)

Call a Gas Safe engineer if…

  • You can smell gas or see signs of a leak
  • The Ideal shows an Emergency or High severity code
  • The boiler keeps locking out after repeated resets
  • You've tried the DIY checks and the fault hasn't cleared
  • There's visible water leaking from the boiler
