Common problems guide

The most common Ideal Sprint problems

The faults most likely to send a Ideal Sprint into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

The 5 most common faults

01
L1 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has shut down because it has become too hot or water is not circulating through the system correctly.

What to try first

Check that all radiator valves are fully openEnsure your boiler pressure is between 1.0 and 1.5 barPress the reset button on the front of the boiler

Est. cost
£150-£350
Parts
Circulating Pump, Thermistor (Temperature Sensor), Heat Exchanger

02
L2 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has tried to light several times but failed, so it has shut itself down for safety.

What to try first

Check that your gas pre-pay meter has credit (if applicable)Check that other gas appliances like your hob are working to ensure gas is reaching the propertyPress the Reset button or turn the control knob to 'Reset' then back to 'On/Service'

Est. cost
£100-350
Parts
Ignition Electrode, Flame Sensing Probe, Gas Valve
Full guide for L2
03
F1 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that the water pressure is too low for it to operate safely, which is usually a simple matter of the system needing a top-up.

What to try first

Locate the filling loop, which is usually a flexible silver hose with small lever valves under the boiler.Slowly open both lever valves until you hear water flowing and watch the pressure gauge.Close both valves tightly once the pressure gauge reaches between 1 and 1.5 bar.

Est. cost
£0-120
Parts
Filling loop, Pressure sensor, Expansion vessel
Full guide for F1
04
Water pressure High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure inside the system is too low to operate safely.

What to try first

Switch off the boiler and allow the system to cool down completely.Locate the filling loop (the flexible silver hose) underneath the boiler.Open the small valve handles slowly until you hear water flowing and the gauge reaches 1.0 - 1.5 bar.Close the valves tightly and restart the boiler.

Est. cost
£0-120
Parts
Filling loop, Expansion vessel, Pressure relief valve

05
FA High Engineer

Your boiler has detected that the water is flowing in the wrong direction through the pipes, or there is an issue with the temperature sensors.

Est. cost
£120-250
Parts
Flow thermistor, Return thermistor, Pump

Call a Gas Safe engineer if…

  • You can smell gas or see signs of a leak
  • The Ideal shows an Emergency or High severity code
  • The boiler keeps locking out after repeated resets
  • You've tried the DIY checks and the fault hasn't cleared
  • There's visible water leaking from the boiler
  • The flame is yellow or orange instead of blue
