The 6 most common faults

01
E09 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure inside the heating system has dropped too low.

What to try first

Locate the external filling loop, usually two silver flexible hoses connected to the pipework underneath the boiler.Open the small valves on the filling loop to allow cold mains water into the system.Watch the pressure gauge on the boiler front until the needle reaches between 1.0 and 1.5 bar, then firmly close both valves.

Est. cost
£80-150
Parts
Filling loop, Pressure relief valve, Pressure sensor

E10 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure inside your heating system has dropped too low.

What to try first

Locate the external filling loop, usually a small braided hose with one or two valves underneath the boiler.Open the valve(s) slowly to allow mains water into the system until the pressure gauge reads between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.Close the valve(s) tightly and restart the boiler.

Parts
Pressure relief valve, Pressure sensor, Expansion vessel

03
24 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has detected that one of the buttons on its control panel is permanently pressed or jammed, which is preventing the system from operating normally.

What to try first

Switch off the power supply to the boiler at the fused spur or consumer unit.Inspect the control panel buttons to ensure none are physically stuck, depressed, or obstructed by grime.Gently press each button several times to see if it 'clicks' and releases properly, then restore the power.

Est. cost
£120-220
Parts
User interface PCB, Control panel assembly

04
51 High DIY-safe

Your boiler is struggling to talk to the wireless thermostat controller, meaning it doesn't know when to turn your heating on or off.

What to try first

Check that your Climatic thermostat has fresh, high-quality batteries.Ensure the thermostat is within range of the boiler and not blocked, or move it closer temporarily to test.Perform a re-pairing procedure by following the reset instructions in your Climatic thermostat manual.

Est. cost
£120-250
Parts
Climatic wireless receiver, Climatic thermostat unit

10 High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure inside your heating system has dropped too low to operate safely.

What to try first

Locate the external filling loop, which is usually a flexible silver braided hose connecting two pipes underneath the boiler.Open the small black or blue valves on either end of the loop until you hear water flowing.Watch the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler and close the valves once the needle reaches the green zone, typically between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.

Est. cost
£80-150
Parts
Pressure relief valve, Pressure sensor, Expansion vessel

06
61 High DIY-safe

Your boiler is struggling because there is trapped air inside the system, which is preventing hot water from circulating properly to your radiators.

What to try first

Check your boiler display for the pressure gauge and ensure it is between 1.0 and 1.5 barIf the pressure is low, use the filling loop underneath the boiler to top it up to the correct levelBleed your radiators starting with the one furthest away from the boiler to release any trapped airOnce bled, re-check the pressure gauge and top up again if necessary

Est. cost
£90-150
Parts
Automatic air vent, Central heating pump, System pressure relief valve

Call a Gas Safe engineer if…

  • You can smell gas or see signs of a leak
  • The Alpha shows an Emergency or High severity code
  • The boiler keeps locking out after repeated resets
  • You've tried the DIY checks and the fault hasn't cleared
  • There's visible water leaking from the boiler
  • The flame is yellow or orange instead of blue
