What causes this fault?

This fault occurs when the boiler's main control board experiences a memory failure or data corruption, causing it to lose its factory-set identity. It essentially means the computer chip no longer understands which model of boiler it is supposed to be controlling. The most common reason is an internal electronic component failure on the PCB, often triggered by an electrical surge or simple age-related wear.

Engineer required

This is a high severity fault. Stop using the boiler and call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not attempt gas-related repairs yourself.
