Technical description
Ignition failure. Check for correct gas supply (purged and valves open). Check ignition electrode position and spark. Check flame sensing electrode connections. Check gas valve operation.
What causes this fault?
This fault occurs when the boiler's control system attempts to start a flame but fails to detect one after several tries. It is often caused by a lack of gas reaching the burner, a worn-out spark electrode that can no longer create a light, or a dirty sensor that cannot 'see' the flame once it has started.
This issue can be more frequent during extreme cold spells if the external gas regulator or pipework freezes, restricting the flow of fuel to the boiler.
Engineer required
This is a high severity fault. Stop using the boiler and call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not attempt gas-related repairs yourself.
